Getting links to your website doesnt
sound to hard, does it? But believe me when i say it takes time
and work. The best links come from people you dont ask or exchange
links with, especially if they have tons of inbound related links
themselves. This is where DMOZ, Yahoo and Wikipedia rule the land.
To get inbound links:

First have unique great content |

Second let prospective linkers know you have the content
- posting in forums is a great way to do this |
Things to avoid:

Don't subscribe to link exchange programs. Many of the new
algorithms either ignore links from link farms, or penalize
sites they link to. |

Don't exchange links - either 2 way or 3 way. Google in particular
gives you great credit for what the industry calls "organic
links" that are grown from just ordinary web surfing. |
