Many websites are built with great intentions and dreams - build
it and they will come - and once they visit, they will buy my service
or product, download my tracts, etc; but a few months later, the
traffic doesnt come or the web visitor come, but doesnt care to
act on what that see.
This story is played out over and over again on the internet. As
a website designer Im frequently asked to build a custom shopping
cart - usually costing a pretty penny, and pretty high monthly fees
for gateways, merchant accounts and transaction fees - and my advise
starts with a question:
What kind of traffic are you getting?
You see, without lots of traffic, a shopping cart is just a big
expense. For my accounts that have no traffic, I give the a bit
more advise:
Lets start with getting some traffic to you site by people who
may be interested in what you want to sell or market. To make this
happen I present the good news and bad news:
First - we need content, and lots of it. "What do you think
they are looking for when you hope they would find you?" (Make
a list) And then write an article addressing each item. I usually
recommend 350 words per topic based on some decent results from
previous articles.
The basic outline for the article goes something like this:
- Tell me what you are going to tell me - a short paragraph.
- Tell me in detail - written at around a 3rd grade level - 250
words.
- Summarize what you told me.
- Now tell me about your related product or service that addresses
any need discussed in the article.
These articles are then embellished with a single H1 header, a
few related pictures with alt tags attached describing the picture.
A title and description tag are attached in the header text.
A few outbound links are added at the bottom to outside websites
that may contain additional information that the visitor may benefit
from.
Second - *the bad news" we need inbound links from related
websites - and having quality content on-site is a critical first
start.
